Over 2,000 Athletes Participate in Kashmir’s First-Ever International Marathon

Srinagar—In a historic moment for Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah flagged off the valley’s first international marathon on Sunday. The event, which drew over 2,000 athletes from across the globe, marked a major milestone in showcasing the region’s return to peace and normalcy.

Bollywood star Suniel Shetty joined Abdullah at the flagging ceremony, lending star power to an event that featured top long-distance runners, including Asian gold medalists and elite athletes from India, Europe, and Africa.

The marathon, organized by the Department of Tourism, featured two main race categories: a full 42-kilometer marathon and a 21-kilometer half-marathon. The event is seen as a major step in positioning Kashmir as a destination not only for tourism but also for international sporting events.

“Kashmir is open and thriving. We welcome tourists from every corner of the world,” said Raja Yaqoob, Director of Tourism, on the eve of the race. “When someone runs 42 kilometers in our valley, it sends a powerful message that peace has truly returned.”

Yaqoob emphasized that the marathon was not only about athletics but also about promoting Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage, unique handicrafts, and vibrant cuisine to the world. “These athletes, with millions of followers on social media, will act as our global ambassadors, helping to further build Kashmir’s image as a peaceful and welcoming destination,” he added.

The marathon’s successful execution is being hailed as a testament to Kashmir’s resilience and the growing confidence in the region’s potential to host world-class events.
