KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s aviation sector continues its remarkable recovery, with air passenger traffic soaring to 9.2 million in January 2025, a 28.2% increase from the same month last year, according to the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM).
For the first time, Malaysia’s air travel industry has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with January’s figures standing at 106.1% of January 2019 volumes. This milestone underscores the sector’s resilience and growing demand for both domestic and international travel.
MAVCOM reported a 3.8% month-on-month (m-o-m) increase from December 2024, reflecting sustained momentum across the aviation landscape.
Strong Domestic and International Growth
- Domestic passenger traffic reached 4.4 million, up 6.9% m-o-m and 32.7% year-on-year (y-o-y).
- International passenger traffic stood at 4.8 million, showing a 24.4% y-o-y increase, despite a slight 1.2% m-o-m dip.
Notably, non-ASEAN markets fueled international traffic growth, with 2.6 million passengers, reflecting a 7.1% m-o-m rise and 34.9% y-o-y surge.
Major Airports See Double-Digit Growth
Several key airports recorded impressive y-o-y gains:
- Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL): +25.6%
- Langkawi International Airport (LGK): +27.5%
- Penang International Airport (PEN): +27.9%
- Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI): +34.5%
- Senai International Airport (JHB): Highest growth at +41.8%
- Kuching International Airport (KCH): +23.0%
Factors Driving Growth
MAVCOM attributed this strong performance to increased travel demand during the Chinese New Year and school holiday season, along with restored seat capacity across major routes.
Additionally, the 30-day visa exemption for travelers from China and India fueled inbound tourism, while expanded international connectivity—such as the launch of the Kuala Lumpur-Dali (China) and Tawau-Singapore routes—contributed to rising passenger numbers.
MAVCOM to Enhance Transparency
MAVCOM Executive Chairman Datuk Seri Saripuddin Kasim highlighted that Malaysia’s aviation industry remains resilient and pivotal to regional connectivity.
To support stakeholders, the commission plans to launch an upgraded performance dashboard, offering deeper insights into airline and airport metrics.
“This initiative aligns with our commitment to enhancing service quality and operational efficiency, ensuring a more transparent and data-driven approach for both passengers and industry players,” he added.
With robust passenger growth, expanded routes, and enhanced transparency, Malaysia’s aviation sector is well-positioned for continued success in 2025.
