Kajang, April 4 – With concerns mounting over the economic ripple effects of Washington’s latest tariff hike, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for an urgent Cabinet meeting this evening. The move underscores Putrajaya’s swift response to shield Malaysia from potential economic disruptions.
The urgency comes after US President Donald Trump announced a sweeping round of punitive tariffs on exports from 180 countries—a move that sent shockwaves through global markets and reignited fears of a recession. Dubbed “Liberation Day” by Washington, the April 2 decision is already prompting governments worldwide to reassess their economic strategies.
Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers, Anwar assured Malaysians that decisive action is on the way.
“God willing, we will announce our response after the meeting,” he said, signaling that relief measures may be unveiled soon.
The meeting will be chaired by the technical committee overseeing trade with the US, as the government races against time to mitigate risks and protect businesses and livelihoods.
For many Malaysians, the stakes are high. The US remains a crucial trade partner, and any disruption could impact industries, jobs, and prices of essential goods. As the country waits for the official announcement, there is hope that the government will deliver a strategy that keeps Malaysia’s economy resilient in uncertain times.
