Hannah White’s mother, Kathleen Nelson, was in critical condition due to undiagnosed pneumonia that had progressed to septic shock. When doctors informed White that her mother had mere hours to live, she booked the fastest flight she could find from Dallas, Texas, to North Dakota, with a layover in Minneapolis.
Unfortunately, her journey took a devastating turn when mechanical issues delayed her first flight at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport by over an hour. With her connecting flight in jeopardy, White was overcome with emotion, fearing she might lose the chance to say a final goodbye.
“I bawled in my seat, knowing there was a possibility I wouldn’t make it in time,” White shared in a viral video.
A Captain’s Compassion
In a remarkable act of kindness, Captain Keith Napolitano, the pilot of White’s flight, stepped in to assist. Upon learning of her situation, he reached out to the pilot of the connecting flight in Minneapolis, asking if it could be delayed. Despite the logistical challenges, the other pilot agreed to hold the plane for nearly 30 minutes—an uncommon but deeply compassionate decision.
Delta staff and passengers rallied to help White make her connection. She was moved to the front of the plane for a quick exit, and a fellow passenger provided her with a map of the Minneapolis airport to navigate the terminal swiftly.
Thanks to these efforts, White was able to reach North Dakota in time to spend her mother’s final hours together.
“My mom passed away the next day,” White shared tearfully. “Delta’s kindness gave me 24 extra hours with her. I was able to say ‘I love you’ one last time and provide her the comfort she gave me my whole life.”
