Kuala Lumpur Among World’s Top Cities for International Arrivals

PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur has solidified its position as one of the world’s premier destinations, earning a spot in the top 10 cities globally for international tourist arrivals, as reported by Euromonitor International.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming celebrated the achievement on Instagram, highlighting the city’s remarkable performance. “Congratulations to KL for being listed among the top 10 cities for international tourist arrivals,” he said. Nga noted that more than 17.5 million tourists have visited Kuala Lumpur in 2024. Additionally, the city secured a spot as the 73rd smartest city in the world, reflecting its continued advancements in urban development and innovation.

He urged Malaysians to unite in the pursuit of excellence, stating, “Let’s work together to make Malaysia great again.”

According to Nadeja Popova, Euromonitor International’s Global Head of Loyalty, global international arrivals surged by 19% in 2024, propelled by robust tourism demand. Europe remained the most sought-after region, welcoming 793 million international trips throughout the year.

Bangkok claimed the top spot with 32 million international arrivals in 2024, followed by Istanbul (23 million), London (21.7 million), Hong Kong (20.5 million), and Mecca (19.3 million). Completing the top 10 were Antalya, Dubai, Macau, Paris, and Kuala Lumpur, which rounded off the list.

“Global cities are increasingly leveraging sports and cultural events to enhance tourism revenues, alongside strategic investments in infrastructure and sustained marketing efforts to attract travelers,” Popova added.
