IIKSTC Pampore Transforms Kashmir Saffron Harvest with Advanced Processing Facilities

Pulwama, Oct 27: In a significant boost to Kashmir’s renowned saffron industry, the India International Kashmir Saffron Trading Centre (IIKSTC) in Pampore has commenced its saffron processing operations as the region enters its annual harvest season. Farmers from across the valley are bringing freshly picked saffron flowers to IIKSTC for stigma separation and drying, a critical stage in producing high-quality saffron.

Dr. Khursheed Ahmad, Incharge of IIKSTC, highlighted the promising start to the season, noting that the saffron bloom has begun in earnest. “The harvest season is still in its early phase, but we are optimistic about a bountiful crop this year,” he shared. “Farmers are utilizing our advanced technologies, which greatly streamline the processing of their harvest.”

IIKSTC’s government-backed facility has revolutionized saffron processing by automating traditionally labor-intensive steps, including stigma separation and drying. In the past, farmers relied on sun drying, which could take up to four days and often impacted the quality of the saffron. Now, thanks to IIKSTC’s advanced vacuum dryers, the drying process is completed in just 30 minutes, preserving the saffron’s color, potency, and overall quality.

Following drying, the saffron is rigorously tested in a NABL-accredited laboratory, where it receives a Geographical Indication (GI) tag to certify its authenticity and premium grade. This certification provides farmers with the option to sell their GI-tagged saffron directly or reach a nationwide audience through IIKSTC’s e-auction platform, connecting with registered buyers from across India.

Officials report that the IIKSTC’s state-of-the-art facilities have significantly bolstered local incomes, with many farmers now able to earn twice as much for their high-quality, certified saffron. The center’s impact has not gone unnoticed, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi commending the Jammu and Kashmir administration’s efforts in supporting the region’s saffron farmers.
