Nine Malaysian Areas Face Unhealthy Air Levels: What You Need to Know

As of 3pm on Monday, July 21, nine areas across Peninsular Malaysia are breathing in air that’s considered unhealthy — a growing concern for families, especially those with children, elderly loved ones, or anyone with respiratory conditions.

The Air Pollutant Index (API), monitored by the Department of Environment (DOE), reported that Alor Gajah in Melaka topped the chart with a concerning API of 157. Not far behind were Seremban, Negeri Sembilan (155) and Kemaman, Terengganu (153) — all well into the “unhealthy” range.

Other affected areas include Johan Setia (Selangor), Temerloh (Pahang) and Balok Baru (Kuantan), each hitting 152. Meanwhile, Nilai (138), Banting (135), and Cheras (132) also reported troubling air quality levels.

An API between 101 and 200 is officially labelled as “unhealthy.” For people with asthma, heart issues, or those particularly sensitive to air pollution — this isn’t just a number. It’s a signal to stay alert and take protective measures.

The DOE is urging the public to limit time outdoors, wear proper face masks if you must step out, and seek immediate help if you feel breathless or experience other respiratory symptoms.

This isn’t just about statistics — it’s about protecting our health and that of our loved ones. Whether you’re commuting, caring for a child, or checking in on an aging parent, let’s stay informed and safe together.
