Indonesia is taking a bold step toward global integration by announcing that English will become a compulsory subject for all primary school students starting in 2027. The move, part of a sweeping education reform, aims to enhance language proficiency among young learners and prepare them for a more connected, international future.
The announcement, made by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, outlines that English lessons will begin from Year 3 of primary school under the 2025 regulation. Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti described the policy as a significant milestone in improving Indonesia’s basic education system. He emphasized the government’s commitment to preparing well-trained teachers to deliver effective English instruction, noting that quality education begins with capable educators.
In addition to English, Indonesia will introduce Portuguese as a priority language in its national curriculum — a move that underscores the nation’s intent to strengthen diplomatic and cultural relations with Brazil. President Prabowo Subianto, during a meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at Merdeka Palace, announced the inclusion of Portuguese as a demonstration of Indonesia’s respect and growing partnership with Brazil.
“As a demonstration of how highly we value Brazil, Portuguese will become one of the priority languages in Indonesia’s education curriculum,” President Prabowo said.
To support this initiative, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology will collaborate with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to develop specialized teaching materials for Portuguese, ensuring students gain not only linguistic knowledge but also cultural understanding of Portuguese-speaking countries.
This reform symbolizes more than just a curriculum change — it represents Indonesia’s readiness to embrace global diversity and its belief that language can bridge nations. By equipping its youth with new linguistic tools, Indonesia is shaping a generation capable of connecting, collaborating, and competing on the world stage.
