In a crucial move aimed at safeguarding Indian nationals, Iran has officially suspended its visa-free entry for ordinary Indian passport holders. The change, effective November 22, comes after multiple reports of Indians being deceived with fake job offers or false promises of transit to other countries.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), numerous Indians were lured into travelling to Iran under the assumption of better opportunities. Once they arrived, many found themselves trapped in dangerous situations, with some even kidnapped for ransom. These incidents highlighted the urgent need to tighten travel regulations and curb criminal misuse of the visa waiver system.
The MEA confirmed that the Iranian government has discontinued the visa waiver facility to prevent further exploitation. This means all Indian travellers, including transit passengers, must now obtain a valid visa before entering or even passing through Iran. Airlines have also been instructed to verify visas before boarding Indian passengers.
The MEA strongly advises Indian citizens to stay alert and avoid falling for agents or intermediaries promising visa-free travel or onward connections through Iran. Anyone planning to visit Iran is urged to follow official channels, cross-check information, and ensure complete documentation for their safety.
When safety becomes uncertain, clarity and caution become essential. This change is a reminder to always rely on verified sources, protect yourself from fraudulent promises, and make informed travel decisions.
