From Passports to MyDigital ID: Social Media Logins to Undergo Serious Verification by Mid-2026, Says Fahmi
The Malaysian government is taking a big step to make social media safer. By the second quarter of 2026, all social media platforms are expected to implement a digital identity verification system, also known as the electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) solution. This initiative aims to enforce the minimum age requirement of 16 for account creation, ensuring young users are better protected online.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil shared that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been directed to work closely with social media platforms, allowing them a reasonable timeframe to adopt the verification process.
“This timeframe is designed to consider what has worked successfully in other countries, including Australia. Platforms that can implement similar measures may find it easier and faster to roll out,” Fahmi explained during a press briefing at the Community Day at Simpang Tiga Langkon National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi).
The verification process will allow accounts belonging to children under 16 to be temporarily frozen, with access restored once they meet the minimum age requirement. Users will verify their identities using official documents such as passports, MyKad, and MyDigital ID.
“This approach is not only aimed at keeping children under 16 off social media but also at combating scams and illegal online gambling. Many scammers and operators use fake accounts, and eKYC will help us tackle this issue effectively,” he added.
In addition, Fahmi revealed plans to expand Nadi centres, with a new centre planned for Sabah. Locations are being evaluated based on geography, accessibility, and population. Sabah currently hosts 131 Nadi centres, the second-highest number in the country after Sarawak.
With this initiative, Malaysia is sending a strong message: the digital world is being made safer, more responsible, and accountable. Social media users can expect a more secure environment where identities are verified and younger users are protected.
