In a landmark moment for Middle Eastern peace, the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey have signed a historic declaration serving as the guarantors of a long-awaited ceasefire deal in Gaza, marking the end of two years of devastating conflict.
At the summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, co-chaired by U.S. President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, world leaders hailed the agreement as a turning point for peace. Trump described the event as a “tremendous day” for the world, while Sisi called it a “new era of peace and stability,” signaling hope for a two-state solution and long-term regional recovery.
The summit also outlined plans for Egypt to host a conference on Gaza’s reconstruction, aiming to restore infrastructure and heal the deep humanitarian scars left by war.
Earlier in the day, Trump addressed Israel’s parliament (Knesset) following the return of 20 surviving hostages from Gaza, part of an unprecedented hostage-prisoner exchange that saw nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees released from Israeli prisons. Hamas hailed this as a “national milestone,” emphasizing the significance of unity and resilience in their struggle for freedom.
Israel confirmed the safe return of the hostages, posting a simple yet emotional message: “Welcome home.” In addition, Hamas agreed to return the bodies of 27 hostages who died in captivity and the remains of a soldier lost during the 2014 conflict.
While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was initially expected to attend the summit, scheduling conflicts led to his absence. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, however, was present, representing a symbolic gesture toward dialogue and reconciliation.
In his passionate address, Trump praised Arab and Muslim mediators for their efforts and urged both sides to “turn forever from the path of terror.” He concluded by saying, “For so many families across this land, it has been years since you’ve known a single day of true peace. The long and painful nightmare is finally over.”
Yet, as celebrations unfold, questions remain about Gaza’s governance post-ceasefire. Hamas has reportedly relinquished administrative control but maintains it remains an integral part of the Palestinian identity. Disarmament, however, remains “out of the question,” according to senior Hamas sources.
Still, amid uncertainty, the declaration offers a rare glimmer of hope, humanity, and healing in a region long marred by war. For the mothers waiting for their children, the children waiting for their fathers, and the families yearning for peace—this moment feels like the first sunrise after a long, dark night.
