Anwar-Putin Meeting Takes Center Stage in Warm and Strategic Visit to Russia

MOSCOW: On the second day of his official visit to Russia, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will sit down with Russian President Vladimir Putin in what many see as a significant step forward in the relationship between the two nations.

Set against the iconic backdrop of the Kremlin, their much-anticipated meeting is scheduled for 1pm local time (6pm in Malaysia) on Wednesday, May 14. This moment isn’t just about diplomacy—it’s about building real connections between countries, people, and futures.

Anwar and Putin are expected to dive into conversations that go beyond protocol. They will explore new opportunities in trade, investment, agriculture, education, aerospace, and energy—areas that could open doors for thousands of Malaysians and Russians alike. The meeting is also expected to include heartfelt exchanges on pressing regional and global matters, reflecting the shared interests of both countries in a fast-changing world.

Before that, Anwar will also meet with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in a separate session, further underlining Malaysia’s intent to strengthen its ties with Russia on multiple fronts.

Adding a deeply personal touch to the day’s engagements, Anwar will receive a courtesy call from Sheikh Ravil Gaynutdin, the Grand Mufti of Russia. Their meeting is expected to highlight shared spiritual and cultural bonds between the Malaysian and Russian Muslim communities.

The Prime Minister arrived in Moscow on Tuesday evening, greeted warmly with a Guard of Honour at Vnukovo-2 International Airport. He is accompanied by a robust delegation of more than 70 officials, including key cabinet ministers like Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Agriculture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, showing the breadth and seriousness of Malaysia’s commitment.

Earlier in the day, Anwar will sit down with top Russian business leaders from 24 major companies in a roundtable discussion aimed at fostering real, on-the-ground economic partnerships. The session, which includes two chambers of commerce, is expected to plant the seeds for future collaboration that benefits citizens on both sides.

As Anwar continues his four-day visit at President Putin’s invitation, the tone has been one of warmth, respect, and genuine curiosity. More than just a diplomatic formality, this trip marks the beginning of a deeper, more human connection between Malaysia and Russia.
