Malaysia’s Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin underscored today that peace and economic growth are deeply connected — and neither can exist meaningfully without the other. Speaking at the Asean–China Defence Ministers’ Luncheon in Kuala Lumpur, he stressed that the region’s stability depends on collective commitment, trust, and mutual respect.
He reaffirmed that Asean deeply values China’s continued support in strengthening regional security and maintaining peace. At the same time, he emphasised the importance of sovereignty, cooperation, and shared responsibility in navigating current global challenges.
“Prosperity and security are inseparable and interdependent. With regional peace comes shared prosperity, and with shared prosperity come respect, trust, and the enduring relationships that make lasting peace possible,” Khaled said during his opening remarks.
Khaled described the luncheon as more than a diplomatic event — calling it a symbol of long-standing partnership, open dialogue, and a mutual desire to build a secure future for Southeast Asia. As one of the world’s economic and connectivity hubs, he said, Southeast Asia’s peace does not only benefit Asean nations — it benefits China and the world.
He acknowledged China as a crucial partner and “a critical promoter of global prosperity,” citing Beijing’s various global initiatives that align with regional development and cooperation goals. Yet, Khaled also reminded attendees that global leadership comes with responsibility — particularly in upholding international law, preventing conflict, and prioritising diplomacy.
“Asean hopes that China, in this role, will continue to uphold international law, promote mediation, and help prevent conflicts before they arise,” he added confidently.
The luncheon took place alongside the 19th Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM), attended by China’s Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun and defence leaders across the region.
The message was clear: dialogue is not merely policy — it is commitment, trust, and a promise to shape a peaceful, prosperous future together.
