Cuti-Cuti Malaysia: RM1,000 Tax Relief to Boost Local Tourism and Cultural Pride in Budget 2026

Malaysians are set to enjoy up to RM1,000 in personal income tax relief for entrance fees to local tourism centres and cultural programmes, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced during his Budget 2026 speech today.

As part of the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 initiative, this move aims to revitalize domestic tourism by inspiring Malaysians to explore their own backyard — from breathtaking islands to rich cultural festivals.

The Prime Minister, who also serves as the Finance Minister, revealed that Malaysia is targeting 47 million tourists next year, with a goal to generate RM329 billion in tourism revenue.

To make this vision a reality, the government will allocate over RM700 million to strengthen the tourism sector. This includes:

  • RM500 million for the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign;

  • RM60 million for promotions, marketing, and cultural events;

  • RM50 million to empower local artisans in handicrafts, batik, and weaving;

  • RM50 million in matching grants for international and charter flights to Malaysia;

  • RM25 million to enhance tourism facilities and conserve UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Mulu National Park (Sarawak), Lenggong Valley (Perak), and FRIM Forest Park (Selangor);

  • RM20 million to strengthen Malaysia’s position in health tourism.

In addition, new geotourism attractions will be developed in Langkawi, including Kilim Geoforest Park, Selat Panchor cave trails, and new hiking paths within the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark — reinforcing Malaysia’s commitment to sustainable tourism.

Further incentives include:

  • Tax rebates up to RM500,000 for tourism operators renovating business premises;

  • 100% tax exemption on income from increased inbound tourism packages;

  • 100% income tax exemption for organizations hosting international-level Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE);

  • 50% tax exemption for companies organizing arts, cultural, tourism, and international sports or recreational events involving foreign participants.

These measures represent a bold step toward empowering local businesses, preserving culture, and creating new opportunities for Malaysians to thrive in the tourism sector. Beyond just travel, it’s an invitation to rediscover Malaysia — its beauty, its people, and its soul.
