New Delhi, July 13 — A fresh wave of global tension is brewing, as the European Union and Mexico voice strong opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest move—threatening to impose 30% tariffs on their exports starting August 1. This aggressive stance, which Trump claims is necessary to correct long-standing trade imbalances, has been called unfair, disruptive, and damaging to the spirit of international cooperation.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded firmly. “We will take all necessary steps to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if required,” she said. Still, von der Leyen emphasized a preference for peaceful dialogue over conflict, stating that the EU remains committed to finding common ground through negotiation rather than confrontation.
Mexico echoed this sentiment, but with an even sharper tone. President Claudia Sheinbaum didn’t mince words: “This is not a fair deal. Sovereignty is never negotiable.” While open to dialogue, she made it clear that Mexico would not tolerate coercive policies that undermine national dignity or economic stability.
In defense of his decision, Trump doubled down in a personal letter to von der Leyen, writing, “Our relationship has been, unfortunately, far from reciprocal.” He warned that any retaliatory actions from affected nations would trigger even steeper duties.
Speaking on Fox News, Trump dismissed international concerns, remarking, “Some countries are very upset now,” but claimed the tariffs have been beneficial to the U.S., bringing in “hundreds of billions of dollars.”
According to the BBC, this tariff threat isn’t limited to the EU and Mexico. Trump’s administration is also targeting Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Brazil—further deepening trade rifts and complicating diplomatic relations. With less than three weeks before the August 1 deadline, hopes for a breakthrough in stalled negotiations are quickly fading.
This brewing economic standoff is more than just a war of tariffs—it’s a test of global unity, diplomacy, and the strength of alliances in an increasingly divided world.
