JERUSALEM, Sept 8 — In a potentially pivotal moment for the conflict in Gaza, Hamas announced it is ready to engage in immediate negotiations following new proposals from the United States aimed at brokering a ceasefire and securing the release of hostages.
The announcement came shortly after former U.S. President Donald Trump issued what he described as a “last warning” to Hamas, urging the group to agree to a hostage deal. Trump revealed that Israel had already accepted his proposed terms, placing the onus on Hamas to respond.
In a statement, Hamas said it “welcomes any initiative that supports efforts to end the aggression against our people,” and emphasized its readiness to sit down at the negotiating table without delay. The group expressed willingness to negotiate the release of all prisoners in exchange for a full cessation of hostilities.
However, Hamas also laid out clear conditions for progress: a definitive end to the war, a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, and the formation of an independent Palestinian committee to govern Gaza immediately.
Trump, taking to social media, was blunt in his message: “The Israelis have accepted my terms. It is time for Hamas to accept as well. I have warned Hamas about the consequences of not accepting. This is my last warning.”
This renewed urgency follows the tragic events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a large-scale attack on Israel, resulting in 251 hostages being taken. Israeli authorities say 47 hostages remain in Gaza today, and 25 of them are believed to be deceased. Israel is also seeking the return of their remains.
As the world watches and waits, the possibility of renewed talks may offer a glimmer of hope — not just for those held captive, but for millions affected by this enduring conflict.
