Japan braces for weekend blizzards, powerful winds and heavy snowfall up to 80cm

Japan is preparing for a powerful winter blast this weekend as the national weather agency issued strong warnings for blizzards, heavy snowfall, intense winds and high waves across western, eastern, and north-eastern regions. Authorities also cautioned that the severe weather could trigger lightning, tornadoes, avalanches, and major transportation disruptions.

Western Japan was expected to be affected from Friday, while stormy conditions were forecast to continue through Saturday in eastern and north-eastern parts of the country due to a strong winter pressure pattern, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Snowfall is expected to be especially heavy in parts of central and northern Japan. Up to 80 centimetres of snow could fall in the Hokuriku region within 24 hours through Saturday morning. The Tohoku region may see as much as 70 centimetres, while the Kanto-Koshin region — including Tokyo — could experience up to 60 centimetres of snow.

Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, is forecast to receive up to 50 centimetres, and the Kinki region surrounding Osaka could see up to 40 centimetres of accumulation.

Residents have been urged to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel where possible, and follow the latest advisories. Emergency and transport services are already preparing for delays and cancellations as safety becomes the top priority during the severe winter conditions.
