Malaysia and Vietnam Strengthen Ties with Upcoming Digital Economy Agreement

KUALA LUMPUR – In a move that signals a deepening bond between neighbours, Malaysia and Vietnam are gearing up to finalise a landmark agreement focused on the digital economy by August this year.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo shared the news following a cordial and forward-looking meeting with Vietnam’s Minister of Science and Technology, Nguyen Manh Hung, on Tuesday (May 27). The two leaders explored shared ambitions in a fast-evolving digital world.

“This upcoming memorandum of understanding (MOU) is more than just paperwork — it’s a shared commitment to building a stronger, smarter future together,” said Gobind. “We’re looking at collaborations in key areas like digital transformation, innovation, emerging technologies, and most importantly, equipping our people with the skills and knowledge needed in the digital age.”

One of the focal points of the agreement is cooperation in cybersecurity and the rollout of 5G, technologies that have become vital for national security and economic growth. Gobind emphasized that this partnership could be a game-changer, not just for Malaysia and Vietnam, but for the broader ASEAN region.

He expressed his optimism in a Facebook post: “This strategic collaboration offers us a unique chance to boost our capabilities, contribute to regional stability, and accelerate progress for our people.”

The planned MOU reflects the growing realization that digital cooperation is no longer optional — it’s essential. As two rapidly developing nations with tech-savvy populations and entrepreneurial spirit, Malaysia and Vietnam are poised to set a new standard in regional digital cooperation.

This story is not just about nations signing a document. It’s about preparing our communities, our businesses, and our youth for the future — and doing it hand in hand.
