Nato Chief, Japan Defence Minister Voice ‘Grave Concerns’ Over China–Russia Patrols

In a tense moment for regional security, Nato chief Mark Rutte and Japan’s defence minister Shinjiro Koizumi have jointly expressed grave concerns following a series of coordinated patrols by Chinese and Russian military aircraft. The warning comes just as Japan–China relations face fresh strain over recent remarks by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan.

According to Tokyo, on Tuesday two Russian Tu-95 nuclear-capable bombers flew from the Sea of Japan to meet two Chinese H-6 bombers over the East China Sea. The aircraft then conducted a large-scale joint flight circling areas around Japan. In response, Japan scrambled its own fighter jets to ensure national airspace security.

The Japanese defence ministry revealed that Rutte and Koizumi, during a brief but urgent 15-minute video call, agreed that the situation demands close and continuous communication. Koizumi also updated Rutte on a separate alarming incident: a Chinese aircraft allegedly locked its radar onto a Japanese plane near Taiwan — a provocative move that heightens the risk of escalation.

South Korea reported similar concerns, stating that Chinese and Russian warplanes entered its air defence identification zone, prompting Seoul to deploy fighter jets. Meanwhile, Beijing and Moscow both insisted the drills were part of annual, routine military cooperation, with Russia noting the exercise lasted eight hours and was monitored by foreign jets.

The backdrop to these rising tensions includes Prime Minister Takaichi’s recent comment hinting that Japan might intervene militarily should China attack Taiwan — an assertion that drew strong condemnation from Beijing.

In a world where military maneuvers are becoming louder than diplomacy, these moments remind us how fragile peace can be — and how vital communication, accountability, and global awareness truly are.
