Omar Abdullah Stands With Grieving Families, Announces ₹10 Lakh Relief for Victims of Border Shelling

SRINAGAR — In a heartfelt gesture aimed at offering comfort during a time of immense sorrow, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced an ex-gratia relief of ₹10 lakh for the families who lost their loved ones in the recent wave of border shelling.

The past week has been devastating for many along the border, where lives were abruptly shattered by relentless shelling from across the border. Families have lost parents, children, neighbors—each one a painful blow to already struggling communities. Among the casualties was senior administrative officer Raj Kumar Thappa, whose sudden death sent shockwaves through the region.

Speaking with deep empathy, Omar Abdullah shared a message of solidarity and sorrow. “I am deeply pained by the tragic loss of innocent lives due to the recent cross-border shelling. Nothing can replace a loved one or heal the trauma these families are going through. But as a small gesture of support, my Government will provide ₹10 lakh to each bereaved family. We stand with every affected home, sharing in their grief and doing all we can to ease their suffering.”

The announcement was made via the official X handle of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), the ruling party in the Union Territory. The party emphasized that while no amount of money can ever replace those lost, the relief is a step toward helping families begin to rebuild.

For the families waking up to empty homes and aching hearts, this gesture is more than financial—it’s a reminder that they are not alone. In this time of grief, the government’s words and actions bring a much-needed sense of compassion and presence.
