PM: Malaysian University Students to Study Constitution and Local History from This Year

Starting this year, all Malaysian university students—both in public and private institutions—will be required to study the Federal Constitution and Malaysian history as part of their general education, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced.

Speaking at the launch of the National Education Blueprint (RPN) 2026–2035 today, the Prime Minister emphasized that these subjects will be taught fully in Malay and will be compulsory for Malaysian students at the tertiary level.

“At the tertiary level, we do not currently make Bahasa Melayu and History compulsory, but starting this year, we will introduce revised general education subjects in all universities for Malaysian students, namely the Federal Constitution and Malaysian History,” Anwar said.

He added that the initiative is designed to ensure every student, regardless of their field of study, has a foundational understanding of Malaysia’s history and the structure of its Federal Constitution.

“It is unreasonable for Malaysian students to lack any understanding of their country’s Constitution and history. If we want to safeguard this nation, our children must master these basic but vital aspects of our identity,” he explained.

In a related announcement, the Prime Minister revealed plans to provide an additional 5,000 student accommodation places starting this year, addressing rising concerns about limited and costly housing, especially in urban areas.

The government has directed government-linked investment companies (GLICs) to lead the development of these accommodations, working directly with universities to prioritize student housing. “We hope to begin this year at selected universities, with a target of providing 5,000 additional accommodation places,” he said.

The new education blueprint represents a coordinated, phased approach to national education policy, ensuring a smooth continuum in human capital development from schools to higher education. The RPN 2026–2035 is jointly led by the Ministry of Higher Education through the Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint (RPTM) and the Ministry of Education through the Malaysian Education Blueprint (RPM).

This initiative reflects Malaysia’s commitment to nurturing informed, responsible, and nationally conscious students who understand their heritage and the laws that govern their country—a step that promises to strengthen both education and national identity for years to come.
