South Korean PM Calls for Unity and Respect Ahead of APEC Summit: A Stand Against Hate and Division

As South Korea prepares to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Gyeongju later this month, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok has urged the nation to take strong action against any form of hate or discrimination targeting foreign visitors.

In a high-level public safety meeting attended by key ministers — including Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung — Prime Minister Kim expressed deep concern over recent anti-China demonstrations that have surfaced across Seoul.

“The government regards the APEC summit not just as a diplomatic event, but as a chance to present the Republic of Korea’s renewed national dignity to the world,” Kim stated firmly. “At this crucial moment, acts of hatred toward foreigners are self-destructive. They not only instill fear among tourists but also harm local small businesses striving to recover.”

While reaffirming the importance of free speech, Kim emphasized that such freedoms must never infringe upon the rights, safety, or respect of others. “Discriminatory actions and humiliating expressions against foreigners must be eradicated without fail,” he said. “These behaviors damage South Korea’s reputation and national honor.”

Kim concluded by urging every ministry to enforce the law strictly and consistently, ensuring that all acts of hate, discrimination, or disruption are addressed firmly to protect both visitors and local merchants during this globally significant event.

As South Korea welcomes leaders and guests from across the world, this call serves as a powerful reminder — that true progress and pride are built not just through economic growth or diplomacy, but through empathy, respect, and shared humanity.
