Terror Strikes in Paradise: Grief and Anguish After Attack on Tourists in Pahalgam

Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir —
What was meant to be a peaceful, joyful day in the lush green meadows of Baisaran Valley turned into a nightmare on Tuesday as gunshots shattered the serenity of Pahalgam — a place often called a slice of heaven on Earth.

At least one life was tragically lost, and several others are feared dead or seriously injured, after armed terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists enjoying a horse ride amidst the stunning high-altitude scenery. The valley, nestled in Anantnag district and revered for its natural beauty and spiritual significance, became the site of horror as locals and visitors scrambled for cover amid the chaos.

Eyewitnesses recalled the moment with trembling voices. “We were laughing, taking pictures, and then suddenly — shots rang out. Screams, panic… people running in every direction. It was like a dream turning into a nightmare,” said one local pony guide, still shaken.

Initial reports suggest that two to three gunmen, dressed in army-like fatigues, emerged from the nearby woods and began firing indiscriminately. A young tourist succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to hospital. Several others remain critically injured. Authorities fear the death toll may rise.

Security forces swiftly launched a massive manhunt through the surrounding forests. Senior police and army officials are on-site, coordinating rescue operations and evacuation. The Resistance Front (TRF), a known terror group affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, has reportedly claimed responsibility.

This heartbreaking incident comes just two months ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra, with Pahalgam serving as one of its two base camps. Officials believe this was a calculated attempt to disrupt peace and instill fear among the people — both locals and visitors.

Condemnations poured in from all corners.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha vowed justice. “Spoke to the DGP & Security officials. Army and J&K Police teams have launched search operations. Those behind this despicable act will be punished,” he posted on X.

Former CM Omar Abdullah wrote: “I’m shocked beyond belief. This attack on our guests is an abomination. The perpetrators are inhuman and deserve no mercy. My heartfelt sympathies to the families.”

PDP President Mehbooba Mufti also expressed her grief: “I strongly condemn this cowardly act. Violence has no place in our society. My prayers are with the victims and their families.”

As the sun sets behind the snow-capped mountains of Pahalgam, the valley mourns. A day that began with joy has ended in tears — a stark reminder of the fragile peace that so many in Kashmir dream of, yet remains just out of reach.

Let us not forget the faces behind these headlines — families who planned a vacation and are now facing unbearable loss. Kashmir weeps with them today.
