Trump Says Xi Promised Not to Invade Taiwan During His Presidency

WASHINGTON, August 16 — In a moment that echoes the tense balance of global diplomacy, former US President Donald Trump shared a striking conversation he had with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the future of Taiwan.

Speaking during an interview on Fox News’ Special Report, Trump expressed his belief that China would not take aggressive action against Taiwan—at least not while he was in the White House. According to Trump, President Xi made a personal assurance to him: “I will never do it as long as you’re president.”

“I’ll tell you, it’s a lot like what we’re seeing with Ukraine and Russia,” Trump told the host. “But I don’t believe China will move on Taiwan while I’m around. That’s what Xi said. He also added something powerful: ‘China is very patient.’ And he meant it.”

Trump’s comments come ahead of his anticipated discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The comparison between the Ukraine conflict and the potential flashpoint in Taiwan serves as a chilling reminder of how easily international relationships can tip from diplomacy to confrontation.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington declined to comment when asked about Trump’s statements.

Though Trump and Xi had their first confirmed call of Trump’s second term just this past June, Trump has also claimed that Xi called him earlier, though he didn’t specify the date.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has never ruled out the use of force to reclaim it. Taiwan, a thriving democracy with its own government, fiercely rejects China’s claims. Despite not having official diplomatic ties with Taipei, the United States remains its primary source of military support and international advocacy.

Trump’s comments may not change current policy, but they shed light on the complex personal relationships that can shape the course of global peace—or conflict.
