Gov’t Introduces QR Code System to Streamline Immigration Checks at KLIA

PUTRAJAYA: In a move to alleviate congestion at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2, the government is set to roll out a trial Quick-Response (QR) code system exclusively for Malaysian travelers this month. The initiative aims to expedite immigration processes and enhance passenger experience at the nation’s busiest entry points.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced that the system will be operational at 40 dedicated lanes in the arrival and departure areas. He explained that the QR code system significantly reduces the time required for immigration checks, cutting the process to just 5-7 seconds compared to the current 15-25 seconds taken by conventional automated gates.

“This technology not only ensures faster clearance but also strengthens security and enhances service efficiency. By embracing advanced technology, we can reduce leakages and improve overall operational reliability,” said Saifuddin.

Under the QR code system, passengers will no longer need to present their passports during the immigration process but must still carry them throughout their journey.

Despite the introduction of the QR code system, Saifuddin assured that existing manual counters and conventional automated gates would remain operational, providing flexibility for travelers.

The idea for the QR code system was initially floated by Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Shamsul Anuar Nasarah in December, highlighting its potential to tackle congestion, especially during peak periods and festive seasons.

The trial marks a significant step forward in utilizing technology to enhance Malaysia’s border control infrastructure, aligning with the government’s commitment to improving travel experiences at its international airports.
