Sonamarg, Jan 13: In a monumental move aimed at improving connectivity and boosting tourism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the much-awaited Z Morh tunnel in the picturesque Sonamarg area of Ganderbal district in central Kashmir.
The 6.5 km-long Z Morh tunnel, located near the Gagengar area along the Srinagar-Leh Highway, was officially dedicated to the nation. This vital infrastructure project will ensure all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, a popular tourist destination in Ganderbal, making it easier for travelers to access the region year-round.
The Prime Minister conducted an inspection of the tunnel, interacting with tunnel authorities and workers involved in its construction. He was accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and several Union Ministers.
The Z Morh tunnel is a key component of a larger strategic project designed to enhance connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region. With its opening, the tunnel will significantly reduce travel time, especially during harsh winters when the traditional routes are often closed due to heavy snowfall.
The project, which also includes a 5 km approach road, is valued at approximately Rs 2,700 crore. It features a bi-directional tunnel along with an escape tunnel to ensure safety during any unforeseen events. Developed by Apco Infratech Pvt Ltd, the Z Morh tunnel is a crucial step toward strengthening infrastructure and boosting tourism in the region.
Later in the day, the Prime Minister is scheduled to address a public gathering in Sonamarg, further emphasizing the importance of this development for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the broader region.
