No to Military Rule: ASEAN Stakeholders Warn Myanmar Elections Threaten Regional Stability

In a strong and united stand, ASEAN stakeholders have firmly rejected Myanmar’s proposed military-run elections, declaring them illegitimate and a violation of the bloc’s Five-Point Consensus. The coordinated response followed a series of high-level meetings led by Malaysia in its role as ASEAN Chair.

The discussions, convened by Special Envoy Tan Sri Othman Hashim, brought together voices from the National Unity Government (NUG), Ethnic Resistance Organisations (EROs), and a diverse coalition of civil society and political representatives. Together, they condemned the junta’s ongoing violence against civilians and its blatant disregard for democratic values.

Participants underscored that any election conducted under military oversight—especially amid widespread conflict and the exclusion of major political actors—would not restore peace but instead entrench authoritarian rule and deepen instability across Southeast Asia.

The coalition urged ASEAN to take urgent, time-bound measures to halt violence, safeguard civilians, and guarantee that humanitarian aid reaches those trapped in conflict zones. They also called for the immediate release of political detainees and for stronger accountability mechanisms to ensure Myanmar’s military junta faces consequences for breaching ASEAN’s commitments.

The meetings ended with widespread appreciation for Malaysia’s leadership and a resounding appeal for ASEAN to stand resolutely with the people of Myanmar. Stakeholders reaffirmed that a genuine path to peace and stability lies in inclusive national dialogue, not in elections orchestrated to legitimise military dominance.

At the heart of it all, this statement is more than politics—it’s about human lives, justice, and the collective hope for a democratic Myanmar. The people of Myanmar deserve more than empty promises; they deserve freedom, safety, and a voice in shaping their future.
