Iran says the US can no longer set terms for the world as tensions over the Strait of Hormuz continue

Iran said on Tuesday that the United States no longer has the power to “dictate” its wishes to other countries, as Washington considers a new proposal from Tehran aimed at easing the crisis around the Strait of Hormuz.

The strategic waterway has been effectively closed off by Iran since the early stages of the war involving the United States and Israel, sending shocks through global energy markets and turning the strait into one of the main focal points of efforts to end the conflict.

“The United States is no longer in a position to dictate its policy to independent nations,” defence ministry spokesman Reza Talaei-Nik said, according to state television. He added that Washington would eventually have to accept that it must abandon what he described as “illegal and irrational demands.”

Although a ceasefire has stopped the fighting between Iran, the United States and Israel, efforts to reach a lasting settlement have so far not moved forward. The proposal now under review in Washington would reportedly allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen while broader peace talks continue.

Speaking ahead of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation defence ministers’ meeting, Talaei-Nik also said Iran was ready to share its defensive military capabilities with independent countries, especially member states of the SCO.

At the heart of this standoff is more than politics. It is about pressure, power, and the ripple effects felt far beyond the region, from government halls to global markets. For ordinary people, these developments are a reminder that decisions made at the top can quickly shape fuel prices, trade routes, and everyday life across the world.
