HONG KONG: In a significant diplomatic gesture, China’s Vice President Han Zheng is set to attend the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. The move underscores Beijing’s readiness to engage with the new US administration and foster stable bilateral relations, according to reports from Chinese state media.
The invitation for Han Zheng to participate in the Washington, DC ceremony came directly from the US side, as reported by China’s national broadcaster, CCTV.
“We are prepared to enhance dialogue and communication with the incoming US government, address differences constructively, and broaden mutually beneficial cooperation,” said a statement from CCTV. “Our aim is to jointly promote the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-US relations.”
China reaffirmed its commitment to fostering relations based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. Highlighting a forward-looking approach, CCTV noted that Beijing is ready to explore a “correct way” for the two nations to navigate their relationship in this evolving era.
President-elect Trump, speaking on January 6, revealed ongoing communication between himself and Chinese President Xi Jinping through their respective representatives. He expressed optimism about fostering a constructive relationship with Beijing.
However, challenges remain. Trump has appointed several prominent China critics to key positions in his administration, including Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. Additionally, the President-elect has pledged to impose a 10% tariff on Chinese goods unless Beijing takes stronger measures to combat the trafficking of fentanyl, a highly addictive narcotic. During his campaign, Trump went as far as threatening tariffs exceeding 60% on Chinese imports.
The participation of Vice President Han Zheng in the inauguration signals an important step toward managing these tensions and building a framework for dialogue and cooperation. As the new administration prepares to take office, the world will watch closely how these two global powers navigate their complex relationship.
