Malaysia and Maldives Forge Deeper Bonds in Clean Energy, Defence, and Digital Growth

PUTRAJAYA, April 28 — Malaysia and the Maldives are ready to take their friendship to new heights, setting their sights on exciting collaborations in floating solar technology, defence, and digital innovation, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today.

Speaking warmly alongside Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at a joint press conference, Anwar highlighted the natural kinship between the two maritime nations. He described the potential for partnership as “vast and growing,” grounded in mutual respect and shared aspirations.

“We already work together in important areas like education, tourism, sports, and health,” Anwar said. “But now, it’s time to expand — floating solar, defence, and digital technology are the next frontiers for us.”

The atmosphere during the press conference was one of genuine camaraderie, reflecting the significance of Muizzu’s four-day official visit — his first to Malaysia since taking office in November 2023, at Anwar’s personal invitation.

On the education front, Anwar proudly shared that cooperation under the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) is evolving. The focus is broadening to include Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), strengthening links between universities and opening new doors for youth in both countries.

“Today, we witnessed the exchange of notes for diplomat training and bilateral consultations — signs of a growing, dynamic relationship,” he added.

Anwar also voiced strong support for President Muizzu’s passionate call to the world to prioritize environmental protection. “We stand with him on this vital cause. His voice matters, and Malaysia is listening,” Anwar affirmed.

The prime minister shared his personal satisfaction with the day’s series of meetings and discussions, noting the significant number of ministers present from both sides. “It shows how much we value our friends from the Maldives — a country that, although a bit distant, remains close to our hearts,” he said with a smile.

Earlier, both leaders witnessed the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and two Exchange of Notes (EoNs) covering a range of sectors aimed at deepening cooperation.

Trade ties are also thriving: Malaysia’s total trade with the Maldives grew by 4.3 per cent in 2024, reaching RM862.7 million compared to RM827.3 million the year before. The Maldives is now Malaysia’s sixth-largest trading partner among South Asian nations — a clear sign that the relationship is not only friendly but flourishing.
