Malaysia is gearing up to make a powerful statement on the regional sporting stage. Immediately after taking over the chairmanship of the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) once the Thailand edition concludes, the nation will officially submit its proposed lineup of 38 sports for the 2027 SEA Games.
Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), highlighted that this list remains provisional, but it reflects Malaysia’s commitment to elevating the Games to new heights. He affirmed that Malaysia, as the National Olympic Committee (NOC), carries a crucial responsibility.
He stated that the NOC must protect and uphold the integrity of the SEA Games, ensure fairness for all SEAGF Member NOCs, and continue strengthening the Olympic Movement throughout Southeast Asia.
During the SEAGF final council meeting for the 2023-2025 term, OCM confirmed that Mohamad Norza presented the progress report for the 34th edition, further solidifying Malaysia’s readiness for its upcoming role.
The 2027 SEA Games will be uniquely hosted across four Malaysian locations — Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Penang and Johor — from September 18 to 29. This multi-state approach signals a more inclusive and dynamic Games experience for athletes and spectators alike.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh recently revealed some of the sports included in the provisional list: athletics, badminton, football, hockey and karate, among others. These selections reflect Malaysia’s drive to spotlight sports with strong regional appeal and competitive depth.
Meanwhile, Thailand is set to begin its showcase with the opening ceremony of the SEA Games 2025 at Rajamangala National Stadium. The event, held in Bangkok and Chonburi, runs until December 20.
