Amman, July 16 – A powerful wave of regional solidarity swept across the Middle East as nations came together to denounce the recent Israeli airstrikes targeting Syrian military convoys near Sweida in southern Syria. Countries including Jordan, Qatar, Iran, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia issued strong statements of condemnation, warning that these attacks threaten not only Syria’s sovereignty but also the broader stability of the region.
The Israeli government, through Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz, justified the strikes as an act to “prevent the Syrian regime from harming” the Druze community. They cited historical and familial ties between the Druze populations in Syria and Israel as part of the rationale.
But across the Arab world, this narrative was swiftly and sharply rejected.
Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates described the attack as a “flagrant violation of international law” and “a dangerous escalation”. Ambassador Sufian Al-Qudah, speaking on behalf of the Jordanian government, emphasized the urgent need to stop such attacks and reaffirmed Jordan’s full solidarity with the Syrian people. “Syria’s stability is essential for regional peace,” he stressed.
Qatar, too, voiced deep concern. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, labeled the attack a blatant violation of Syria’s sovereignty. He urged all stakeholders to pursue dialogue and peaceful solutions, underscoring Qatar’s belief that the region’s stability is intertwined with Syria’s.
Iran joined the chorus, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei expressing sorrow over the civilian casualties in Suwayda. He warned that Israel’s repeated aggressions—and the global community’s silence—are emboldening further violations of international norms. “This silence is dangerous,” he warned in a statement.
Kuwait’s response was similarly resolute. It called on the UN Security Council to fulfill its responsibility and “deter further violations.” The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry’s statement left no room for ambiguity, calling the Israeli actions a “continuation of violations” that must be stopped.
Saudi Arabia condemned what it called Israel’s ongoing “interference in Syrian internal affairs.” It urged the international community to take a firm stand and protect Syria’s sovereignty, invoking the 1974 Disengagement Agreement as a violated framework.
At a time of growing tension and human suffering, these unified voices from the Middle East underscore a shared demand for justice, respect for sovereignty, and regional stability. The message is clear: Syria’s security is not a bargaining chip—it is a red line for the region.
