In a significant step toward strengthening India’s global relationships, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives — a journey that carries not just diplomatic weight, but also the hopes of millions looking toward a future of mutual growth, innovation, and unity.
Before his departure from New Delhi, PM Modi expressed heartfelt optimism about deepening India’s ties with the UK under the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” a bond that has matured meaningfully in recent years. “This visit is about bringing people closer, building bridges across sectors — trade, technology, education, and defence — and ensuring our partnership leads to new opportunities for youth, professionals, and businesses alike,” he said.
The trip is not just about formalities and handshakes; it is about people. It’s about Indian students studying in the UK, the startups collaborating across borders, and the shared values of democracy, innovation, and inclusivity.
PM Modi’s scheduled meeting with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is expected to carry forward discussions focused on creating jobs, fostering innovation, and expanding trade. Notably, the India-UK trade relationship surpassed USD 55 billion in 2024, and the Free Trade Agreement signed in May 2025 marks a turning point that promises even greater opportunities for both nations.
Technology and education have also emerged as strong pillars of this partnership. The joint Technology Security Initiative, launched in July 2024, covers next-gen sectors like AI, biotech, semiconductors, and quantum research. Meanwhile, the inauguration of Southampton University’s Gurugram campus reflects a shared commitment to educational excellence and cultural exchange.
The UK leg of the visit will also see PM Modi meeting King Charles III — a gesture reflecting the deep-rooted diplomatic warmth between the two nations.
From London, PM Modi will travel to the Maldives to take part in the 60th anniversary of the island nation’s independence — a symbolic and strategic moment, especially as both countries mark six decades of diplomatic ties.
In Male, he will meet Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and other key leaders. PM Modi emphasized his commitment to a “Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership,” reinforcing India’s vision of peace and prosperity across the Indian Ocean Region. He remarked, “This visit is a step forward in strengthening our neighbourhood-first policy and deepening our collective commitment to regional stability.”
