Srinagar – In a compassionate and timely response to the ongoing disruption caused by the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway closure, Indian Railways has launched a special train service between Budgam and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. The service, which began on September 19, 2025, will continue daily for 15 days until October 3, 2025, offering a vital lifeline for stranded and worried passengers.
Due to relentless heavy rains and severe waterlogging, road connectivity in the Jammu division has taken a massive hit. Acknowledging the struggle faced by commuters—especially those with critical travel plans—the railway authorities stepped up to bridge the transportation gap.
Earlier efforts to connect Katra and Sangaldan through special trains were disrupted by weather-related road damage. However, after urgent appeals from local residents and civil administration, Northern Railway has resumed a new route from Katra to Banihal, ensuring much-needed travel support under the watchful leadership of Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Kumar, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal, and Senior Divisional Operations Manager Arish Bansal.
The special train, Train No. 04688, departs Banihal at 11:00 AM and reaches Katra at 1:30 PM, halting at Reasi, Bakkal, Dugga, Sawalkot, Sangaldan, Sumber, and Khari. The return train, Train No. 04687, leaves Katra at 1:45 PM and arrives at Banihal at 4:10 PM, making stops at the same stations.
Railway authorities reaffirmed that passenger safety and convenience remain their utmost priority. “With road services suspended, this special train is not just a transport option—it’s a connection of care, comfort, and hope during trying times,” said a senior official.
This is more than just a train—it’s a lifeline.
For the elderly, the ill, pilgrims, and families who found themselves stranded or anxious due to the highway closure, this service brings relief, stability, and a sense of normalcy in the chaos. It’s a powerful reminder that even in moments of disruption, thoughtful action can make all the difference.
