SRINAGAR – In a heartfelt decision prioritizing safety over adventure, the Tourism Department has temporarily restricted all trekking activities in North Kashmir, particularly in the scenic areas of Gulmarg, Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara. This move comes in light of the unpredictable weather and growing concerns for the well-being of trekkers, locals, and visiting tourists alike.
The advisory, issued by the Assistant Director of Tourism, Gulmarg, emphasizes that no trekking will be allowed—short or long—without official clearance. Even lower-altitude trails, often seen as harmless, are now under the same restriction unless specifically permitted by competent authorities.
“Your safety is our responsibility, but it’s also your right,” the advisory seems to echo, reminding everyone that any violation will be at the sole risk of the individual involved. While the adventure of Kashmir’s lush landscapes calls to many, nature’s unpredictability must not be underestimated.
This isn’t just a bureaucratic formality. Copies of this advisory have been sent to Deputy Commissioners, Senior Superintendents of Police, the Director of Tourism Kashmir, and other key figures. It’s a coordinated effort to ensure the public stays informed and safe.
Officials stress that this is a precautionary measure, not a punishment. “We understand how much our valleys mean to trekkers,” said one official on condition of anonymity, “but it’s better to wait a few days than to risk lives in unpredictable weather.”
So for now, pack your patience instead of your gear. North Kashmir will always be here—but we want you to be here to enjoy it, too.
