In a dramatic escalation of his immigration crackdown, former U.S. President Donald Trump called for the jailing of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. The remarks came shortly after armed Texas troops arrived in Illinois as part of an aggressive immigration enforcement effort that’s drawing national outrage and legal challenges.
Chicago, the country’s third-largest city, has become the latest flashpoint in a tense standoff between federal immigration authorities and local Democratic leaders. Masked ICE agents, backed by federal troops, have begun conducting mass raids in several cities, igniting protests and concerns over human rights violations.
Trump lashed out on his social media platform, accusing the Democratic leaders of “failing to protect ICE officers” and calling for their imprisonment. This continues a pattern of Trump publicly pressuring law enforcement to prosecute his political rivals — a move seen by critics as a hallmark of authoritarian regimes.
During a White House event focused on Antifa — which Trump controversially designated a terrorist group — the rhetoric grew even more intense. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem compared Antifa to Hamas, calling the protest group “just as dangerous” and accusing them of having an agenda to destroy America from within.
