PM Starmer condemns Russian warship warning shots near British yacht as ‘reckless’

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly criticized the actions of a Russian naval vessel after it fired warning shots near a UK-flagged civilian yacht in waters close to British territory. The incident has raised concerns about maritime safety and escalating tensions in the region.

According to statements released by both British and Russian defence officials, the event took place on Tuesday when the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich reportedly attempted to communicate with the yacht but received no response.

Speaking during the G7 Summit in France, Starmer described the situation as deeply troubling and unnecessary. He emphasized that the firing of warning shots by a military vessel near a civilian yacht created a dangerous scenario that could have had serious consequences.

“What happened in the Channel was deeply concerning. It was reckless,” Starmer said during an interview with BBC News.

The British Prime Minister added that the Ministry of Defence’s assessment suggested the Russian vessel was drifting and that warning shots were fired as part of an attempt to alert the yacht. Nevertheless, he stressed that such actions should never have occurred.

Starmer also expressed concern for the individuals aboard the yacht, noting that the experience would likely have been frightening and distressing.

Russian officials offered a different perspective on the incident. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the crew of the Admiral Grigorovich identified a yacht traveling on a course that could potentially result in a collision with the warship.

The ministry stated that multiple attempts were made to establish radio communication with the yacht. When those efforts failed, the frigate reportedly fired warning shots, including small arms fire, ahead of the vessel to gain attention and prevent a possible accident.

Russian authorities said the yacht subsequently altered its course and moved away from the area.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Ministry of Defence characterized the event as an isolated incident. Officials also clarified that it was unrelated to a separate operation involving the interception of a suspected Russian shadow fleet vessel by British commandos over the previous weekend.

The episode highlights the increasingly sensitive nature of maritime encounters in European waters, where military and civilian vessels often operate in close proximity. As geopolitical tensions continue to influence naval activity across the region, incidents such as this underscore the importance of clear communication, professionalism, and restraint to ensure the safety of everyone at sea.

For ordinary civilians navigating international waters, encounters involving military vessels can be intimidating and potentially dangerous. The hope among international observers is that all parties continue to prioritize safety, transparency, and diplomatic engagement to prevent similar incidents in the future.
