KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 — Ananda Krishnan, the visionary billionaire whose business empire reshaped Malaysia’s telecommunications, oil and gas, and media industries, passed away peacefully yesterday at the age of 86. The announcement was made by his private investment arm, Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd.
“The family kindly requests privacy during this time of mourning,” the statement read.
Ananda’s legacy extends far beyond his vast corporate ventures. “His contributions to nation-building and the corporate sector were monumental, and his philanthropic efforts profoundly impacted countless lives,” Usaha Tegas added.
Ranked by Forbes as Malaysia’s sixth-richest person, with a net worth of US$5.1 billion (approximately RM22.66 billion), Ananda built his fortune primarily in the 1980s and 1990s. His portfolio included major stakes in Maxis Bhd, Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd, and Bumi Armada Bhd, cementing his status as a titan of industry.
Despite his towering success, Ananda was known for his low profile, avoiding the media spotlight and leading a private life split between Malaysia and France, where he lived with his wife.
Media reports highlight that Ananda’s only son has embraced the monastic life as a Buddhist monk in Thailand, while his two daughters have remained outside the family business.
Ananda Krishnan leaves behind an enduring legacy of business acumen, philanthropy, and humility, forever shaping Malaysia’s corporate landscape.
