In a heartfelt move to ensure the safety of its people, the Srinagar District Administration has issued an urgent evacuation advisory for residents living in seven low-lying localities: Lasjan, Soiteng, Nowgam, Vyethpora, Gopalpora, Padshahibagh, and Mehjoor Nagar.
This advisory follows a reported breach at Shalina in Budgam, which raised concerns about potential flooding in these already vulnerable areas. The administration emphasized that this is a precautionary step, not a reason to panic — but one that demands immediate action from the local community.
Since early morning, announcements have echoed through the streets — made via local masjids, community committees, and public address systems by the police and revenue officials — urging residents to leave for higher, safer ground.
A government spokesperson reiterated:
“This is a preemptive and necessary measure. We urge all residents in the mentioned areas to cooperate fully with the authorities and prioritize their safety above all.”
Meanwhile, the Jhelum River has crossed danger levels, particularly near Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh, triggering further caution. At 5:00 AM, the water level at Sangam was recorded at 27.48 feet, significantly above the danger mark of 20 feet. In Srinagar’s Ram Munshi Bagh, it stood at 22.31 feet, just over its danger mark of 21 feet.
Earlier at 2:00 AM, gauge levels were even more alarming, at 27.64 feet in Sangam and 22.37 feet at Ram Munshi Bagh, as shared by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department.
Although water levels have begun to gradually recede, the situation remains sensitive. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
The community spirit remains strong — people helping each other, preparing to move, and checking on neighbors. This is a time to act with care, compassion, and courage. Let’s stay informed, stay safe, and support one another.
