Srinagar — In a much-needed relief effort, the Government of India has sanctioned 5,061 new houses under a special initiative of the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G) for Jammu and Kashmir. This project specifically targets families in rural areas whose homes were damaged or destroyed in recent floods and landslides, offering them hope and a pathway to rebuild their lives.

The move has been welcomed with open arms across the Union Territory. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for the approval, emphasizing that these homes will not only offer safety and shelter, but also help families regain economic and emotional stability.

“A new home means more than just four walls—it’s a fresh start,” said LG Sinha. “This initiative will provide stability and dignity to thousands of families, and enable them to rebuild their lives with renewed confidence.”

According to officials from the Rural Development Department, the housing units will be constructed on a priority basis to ensure that affected families are rehabilitated as early as possible. Moreover, the construction process is expected to create local job opportunities, supporting the rural economy and restoring livelihoods.

The initiative has been warmly received by locals and grassroots leaders, including panchayat members, who called the move a timely intervention in the wake of this year’s devastating natural disasters. For many who had been living in temporary shelters or with relatives, this announcement brings a ray of hope in otherwise difficult times.

Because behind every number, there’s a name.

Every house sanctioned isn’t just a unit of construction—it’s a story waiting to be rebuilt. A child who will now sleep safely. A mother who won’t worry about leaking roofs. A family that will finally have a place to call home again.

Let’s not forget—the impact of policy is real, and today, thousands of lives in J&K are taking a step toward dignity and stability.
