Chinese nationals can now once again apply for tourist visas to India at Indian missions and consulates worldwide, signaling a positive step toward rebuilding relations between the two nations after the eastern Ladakh military stand-off.
Tourist visas for Chinese citizens, which had been suspended since May 2020 due to tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), were resumed in July. This week, the visas have become readily accessible at Indian embassies and consulates, including those in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong, according to sources familiar with the development.
This move is part of a broader effort by India and China to stabilize ties and enhance people-to-people connections. Recent agreements include the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, direct flights between the countries (which restarted in October), celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, and visa facilitation measures.
The resumption of tourist visas and other initiatives reflects a shared recognition by both nations of the importance of personal interactions, cultural exchange, and tourism in fostering mutual understanding. For travelers eager to explore India’s rich heritage, this is a welcome development, opening doors to experiences that connect people beyond borders.
