Australia Announces Free Daily Solar Hours for Millions of Households by 2026

Australia is taking a bold step toward a cleaner and more inclusive energy future. The government has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative that will provide households across the country with at least three hours of free solar power every day — even for those who do not own solar panels. The program, called the Solar Sharer, is set to launch in 2026, marking one of the most ambitious renewable energy inclusion policies globally.

The first rollout will begin in New South Wales, South Australia, and southeast Queensland, with a nationwide expansion to follow. Households will benefit most during midday when solar generation is at its peak, meaning anyone who shifts their electricity use to these hours will receive the free power.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen emphasized that the plan is designed to benefit both homeowners and renters alike.

Bowen explained,
“People who can move their electricity use into the zero-cost power period will benefit directly, whether they have solar panels or not and whether they own or rent. The more people take up the offer and move their use, the greater the system benefits that lower costs for all electricity users will be.”

The announcement had an immediate effect on market sentiment, with shares of major energy providers AGL and Origin Energy dropping 3% in Tuesday afternoon trading. Experts say the move reflects Australia’s acceleration toward renewable energy adoption, particularly as peak solar production from the nation’s 4 million rooftop solar homes often overshoots demand midday.

Under the program, anyone — including apartment residents — can participate, provided they have a smart meter and shift electricity-intensive activities such as charging electric vehicles, running appliances, or cooling systems to midday hours.

This initiative supports Australia’s ambitious target of 82% renewable electricity by 2030, and aligns with a legislated commitment to cut emissions by 43% from 2005 levels.
