Fierce Overnight Gale Wreaks Havoc Across Kashmir, Causes Power Outages and Flight Cancellations

Srinagar, March 28 – A powerful windstorm swept across Kashmir overnight, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The howling gales uprooted trees, damaged property, and triggered widespread power outages, while also forcing the cancellation of 19 flights at Srinagar International Airport.

The storm, which began late last night and continued into the evening, caused severe disruptions across the valley, with the worst impact felt in Srinagar and North Kashmir. Several homes suffered extensive damage as rooftops were ripped off, boundary walls collapsed, and outdoor structures were destroyed.

Widespread Damage Across Kashmir

The violent winds battered multiple districts, including Srinagar, Ganderbal, and Budgam. In Srinagar city, a vehicle was crushed near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) after a tree fell on it. Similar devastation was reported in Sopore and Ganderbal, where rooftops were torn apart and outdoor structures suffered heavy damage.

On Dal Lake, strong winds created hazardous conditions, prompting emergency rescues of tourists and locals stranded on the water.

Power Outages and Restoration Efforts

The storm caused significant damage to power lines, plunging multiple areas of Srinagar into darkness. A Power Development Department (PDD) official confirmed that over 90% of electricity has been restored, with efforts underway to bring back power to the remaining affected regions.

“The gusty winds severely damaged power infrastructure, particularly in Southern and Central Kashmir,” the official said. “Our teams have been working tirelessly to restore supply.”

Chief Engineer of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), Aaquib S. W. Deva, acknowledged the damage caused by falling trees and debris, adding that restoration efforts were ongoing. “We appreciate the patience of residents as our teams work to restore power as quickly as possible,” he stated.

Flight Disruptions at Srinagar Airport

The storm’s impact extended to air travel, with 19 flights cancelled due to turbulent conditions at Srinagar Airport. An official reported that between 6:30 AM and 7:40 PM, the airport recorded wind speeds reaching 17 knots, with gusts up to 27 knots, severely affecting flight operations.

Passengers faced multiple delays and travel disruptions, as 15 arrivals and 14 departures were scheduled during the affected period.

Weather Outlook

Despite the overnight turmoil, Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, reassured residents that dry weather is expected to prevail until April 6.

Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage, while restoration efforts remain in full swing across Kashmir.
