Security concerns surrounding the FIFA World Cup have heightened after authorities discovered a deceased individual inside a vehicle parked near the training facility being used by Iran’s national football team in Tijuana, Mexico.
The incident occurred close to Caliente Stadium, where Iran’s squad, known as Team Melli, has been conducting training sessions ahead of its upcoming World Cup matches in the United States. The tournament is currently being co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
According to reports from the scene, law enforcement officers inspected a gray Toyota SUV bearing California license plates that had been parked in a supermarket parking area opposite the stadium. During the inspection, authorities found a body concealed inside the vehicle’s trunk.
Forensic teams dressed in protective gear arrived at the location to conduct a detailed examination before removing the remains for further investigation. Officials from the Tijuana prosecutor’s office confirmed that the discovery was made during a routine patrol operation.
Authorities stated that the individual had been placed inside a black bag and showed indications of having suffered violent injuries. Preliminary assessments suggest the vehicle may have been abandoned several days before the discovery.
The case has drawn additional attention because of its proximity to a World Cup training venue, raising questions about security conditions in the surrounding area. Iran’s national team had initially planned to establish its World Cup preparation camp in Arizona. However, logistical and geopolitical considerations led the delegation to relocate its training operations to Mexico. Since arriving in Tijuana, the team has reportedly been operating under enhanced security measures, including escorted travel between its accommodation and training facilities.
Witnesses reported that the team’s security convoy departed the stadium shortly after authorities completed the removal of the body from the scene. Officials have not publicly indicated whether the incident has prompted any changes to the team’s existing security arrangements.
