In a heartening step towards building inclusive public spaces, authorities in Pulwama have initiated the groundwork for the district’s first all-women park—finally answering a long-standing need for safe, dedicated recreational areas for women.
Nestled in the serene surroundings of Sirnoo, just outside Pulwama town, the park promises more than just greenery—it symbolizes a space where women can breathe freely, walk confidently, and simply be themselves. This isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s about dignity, wellness, and community.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Municipal Council Pulwama and backed by the Administrative Department, is being funded through the 15th Finance Commission Grants, with a budget allocation of ₹2 crore. The park is expected to feature thoughtfully designed amenities—walking tracks shaded by trees, lush green rest areas, open-air gyms, and peaceful corners for reflection and conversation.
Much of the momentum behind the project has come from Waheed ur Rehman Parra, the local MLA and PDP leader, whose commitment to gender-sensitive urban development has been vocal and consistent. “This park is not just a space—it’s a message that our women matter, that their well-being and joy are worth investing in,” Parra said.
In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, the Chief Executive Officer of the Municipal Council has requested the immediate demarcation of at least 10 kanals of land for the project, urging swift action from the Assistant Commissioner and Tehsildar.
The response from the local community has been overwhelmingly positive. “It feels like someone finally heard us,” said Nuzhat Jan, a resident. “We’ve waited years for a place where women can walk without hesitation, exercise without stares, and just relax. I hope it becomes a vibrant space of sisterhood.”
Beyond bricks and benches, the proposed park is being seen as a step towards social change—one that will bring women and children into the public sphere with pride and safety.
