Srinagar: A heated controversy has erupted over a fashion show held at the renowned ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir during the holy month of Ramazan. The event, featuring provocative outfits and performances, has drawn sharp criticism from religious leaders and the wider Kashmiri community, who see it as an affront to the region’s deeply rooted cultural and spiritual values.
Leading the condemnation, Hurriyat Conference chief and Kashmir’s head priest, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, expressed his outrage over the event, calling it “deeply offensive and unacceptable.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated:
“Outrageous! That in the holy month of Ramadan, an obscene fashion show is organized in #Gulmarg, with pictures and videos going viral, sparking shock and anger among people.”
Mirwaiz further emphasized the deep religious and Sufi traditions of Kashmir, questioning how such an event could be permitted in a region known for its spiritual heritage.
“How could this be tolerated in the Valley, where Sufi saints have left behind a legacy of piety and faith? Those responsible must be held accountable. Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in #Kashmir!”
Public Outrage and Government Response
Videos and images from the controversial event quickly went viral on social media, triggering widespread dismay among residents and religious scholars. Many have condemned the show as a blatant disregard for local customs, especially during Ramazan, a time of fasting, reflection, and heightened religious devotion.
Responding to the growing backlash, the Chief Minister’s Office acknowledged the public sentiment and assured swift action.
“The shock & anger are totally understandable. The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities, and that too during this holy month. My office is in touch with the local authorities, and I’ve requested a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours. Further action will follow based on the findings.”
