Colombo: Reinforcing its role as a steadfast ally and first responder, India has donated critically-needed medicines to Sri Lanka in response to an urgent request from Colombo, the Indian High Commission announced on Thursday.
As part of this humanitarian gesture, India gifted 50,000 ampoules of Furosemide injection (20mg/2ml) to address a pressing shortage in Sri Lankan hospitals. The consignment was officially handed over by Santosh Jha, the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, to Nalinda Jayatissa, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Health and Mass Media.
A Longstanding Commitment to Sri Lanka’s Health Sector
The Indian High Commission emphasized that India has consistently stood by Sri Lanka in times of crises, particularly in the healthcare sector.
- During the COVID-19 pandemic, India delivered over 25 tonnes of medicines in May 2020 and supplied 500,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine in January 2021, followed by 100,000 Rapid Antigen Test kits in February 2022.
- In response to Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, India extended a $1 billion credit facility in March 2022 to ensure the uninterrupted supply of essential items, including medicines. This facility, originally valid for a year, was later extended until March 2024 upon Sri Lanka’s request.
- In April-May 2022, India provided over 26 tonnes of medical supplies to hospitals including Peradeniya University Hospital, Jaffna Teaching Hospital, and Hambantota General Hospital to help mitigate a severe shortage of medicines.
Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure in Sri Lanka
Beyond emergency aid, India has played a pivotal role in enhancing Sri Lanka’s healthcare infrastructure. Key initiatives include:
- The ‘1990 Suwa Seriya’ ambulance service, providing emergency medical assistance across the country.
- A 150-bed multi-specialty hospital in Dickoya, catering to the medical needs of Sri Lankans.
- Construction of a new surgical unit at Teaching Hospital, Batticaloa.
- Upgradation of medical infrastructure at Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Kilinochchi District Hospital, and Mullaitivu District Hospital.
India’s unwavering commitment to Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector underscores the deep-rooted ties between the two nations, reflecting a partnership built on mutual trust and support.
