Fake Degrees Real Consequences: Srinagar Man Faces Charges for Forged Medical Credentials

SRINAGAR, July 3 — In a case that has shocked the medical community and shaken public trust, the Crime Branch Kashmir (CBK) has filed a chargesheet against a man accused of faking his way into one of the valley’s top hospitals.

The accused, Numan Farooq Wani of Umarabad Zainakote, Srinagar, allegedly posed as a qualified doctor using counterfeit degrees and a forged Medical Council of India (MCI) registration certificate. He reportedly held a government position at SKIMS Medical College and Hospital, Bemina, since 2016, drawing a full salary for nearly seven years — all based on falsified documents.

What started as a tip-off led the Economic Offences Wing of CBK to dig deeper. The investigation uncovered that Wani had never legitimately earned the MBBS or MD degrees he claimed, nor was he registered with the MCI or the State Medical Council. Yet, he walked hospital halls, treated patients, and earned the trust of an unsuspecting system.

The chargesheet, filed before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Srinagar under FIR No. 01/2023, invokes serious sections of the Ranbir Penal Code — including cheating, forgery, and destruction of evidence.

“This is not just a case of fraud; it’s a betrayal of public faith and a risk to countless lives,” said a CBK spokesperson. “Our investigation found the evidence solid. The accused deliberately forged multiple documents to secure a government job meant for qualified doctors.”

The case is now in the hands of the judiciary. Meanwhile, the medical community and the public alike are left grappling with disturbing questions: How did this happen? And how many more like him could be slipping through the cracks?

This case serves as a stark reminder — integrity in healthcare is not just a value, it’s a responsibility.
