Modi to Attend ASEAN Summit Virtually as India Celebrates Deepavali, Says Anwar

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be joining the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur virtually this weekend, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed today.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Anwar revealed that he had received a personal phone call from Modi, during which both leaders discussed advancing Malaysia-India relations to a more strategic and comprehensive level.

“Prime Minister Modi informed me that he will attend virtually as the Deepavali celebrations are still ongoing in India at that time,” Anwar said.

He emphasized that India remains one of Malaysia’s most valued partners—a key player in trade, investment, technology, education, and regional security cooperation. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration and enhancing ASEAN-India cooperation to promote peace, prosperity, and shared growth in the region.

The 47th ASEAN Summit will take place from October 26 to 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, with Malaysia serving as the ASEAN Chair this year. Anwar also noted that US President Donald Trump and several other global leaders have confirmed their attendance.

In moments like this, diplomacy goes beyond borders and celebrations. It reminds us that while nations may be divided by geography, they are united by shared visions for peace and progress. Even as India celebrates the light of Deepavali, it continues to shine brightly on the global stage.
