Srinagar, Sep 03 – A wave of concern is sweeping across the Kashmir Valley as the Jhelum River, lifeline to many, has breached the flood alert mark at Sangam. The announcement came with a sense of urgency from the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department, urging communities to remain alert as the situation intensifies.
Water levels at Sangam are rising at an alarming pace — nearly 1.5 feet every hour, as confirmed by Er Showkat Hussain, Chief Engineer of I&FC Kashmir. “We’re on high alert. Every team is in the field. We’re monitoring weak points round the clock and have deployed sandbags and other safety measures wherever needed,” he shared.
While no major breach has been reported yet, a minor overflow at Vecho Nala in Kulgam was promptly managed — a small relief in what could become a major flood emergency if rains continue.
Back in Srinagar, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired an emergency meeting this morning with the Divisional Commissioner, Deputy Commissioners, and senior officials to map out a response strategy. “Every officer has been ordered to stay alert and respond without delay,” a government source said.
Political leaders, including Nasir Aslam Wani and Sakina Itoo, are expected to visit Vecho Nala for an on-ground review, showing a united front as the region braces for more rainfall.
Officials have also issued a stern public advisory: Stay away from riverbanks and other water bodies. Your safety is paramount.
As Kashmir holds its breath, the mood on the ground is tense but hopeful — trusting that timely action, community awareness, and preparedness will keep disaster at bay.
